Description

Creative Student Stories for Different Levels and Curriculum Requirements

Audience: ESOL Instructors, ESOL Coordinators & Program Managers

Student portraits are powerful learning and storytelling tools. This hands-on workshop explores ways for students to tell each other's stories, improve their skills and build community.

Creating portraits can be customized to curriculum or class requirements, from grammar points and literacy skills like tenses, question formation, and sequencing, to topics centered on immigration, work, family, food or health. We will discuss techniques for working with different levels of English proficiency and digital literacy, and different project lengths and formats – from digital presentations to gallery walks. Workshop participants will create short profiles of each other and receive a handout with activities, techniques and online examples.

Facilitator: Elke Stappert - is a lead ESOL and Literacy instructor at the New York Public Library, a part-time ESOL teacher at 1199 SEIU Funds and the chair-elect of TESOL's Video and Digital Media Interest Section. Her teaching focus and interest is in developing activities and materials to encourage outside of class practice.
